The Question of God: History and Criticism

Description
FCT Project PTDC/FIL/64249/2006
This project has two lines of development: «The Question of God in the History of Philosophy» and «The Question of God. Philosophical Essays». Each one of these two lines ought to conduct to the publication of a collective work. In the first line, we want to learn the philosophical questioning of the theme of God, with the tradition of philosophy, since the ancient Greek philosophers till our days. The divine was, in the ancient Greek philosophy, the quality of the highest nobility, that was suitable to the first principles and to the superior natures. The divine things were therefore those from which all the others would depend. The conception of the divine would affect the understanding of everything else. Afterwards, the historical and mutual influences between philosophy and the traditions of revealed religions, like Judaism, Christianism and Islamism, have changed deeply the sense of the divine, but the theme of God did not became less central. Even after the Nietzschean proclamation of the death of God, God did not vanish from human fundamental interrogations. Concerning the presence of the theme of God in western thought, since remote antiquity till actuality, the first line of research covers a very wide temporal ambit, though we do not intend to make a history of the theme of God. We want to be able to make a mature approach to the theme of God, today, through multiple and different monographic studies about philosophers and philosophical currents that have contributed significantly to deepen the insight into the question of God, in the history of Philosophy. To accomplish such studies, we count on more than thirty collaborators, researchers and specialists, beyond the members of the team of research. To concretize the project’s second line, that encourages the formulation of personal philosophical thought, we count on all thinkers, among members and collaborators, who wish to express a reasoned position within the question of God. Philosophical pluralism is a mark of the spirit of this project, as much for the monographic studies of the first line as for the philosophical essays of the second line.
