João Eugénio Lopes Mirrado Paisana (1945-2001) was an Associate Professor at the Philosophy Department of the School of Arts and Humanities, at the University of Lisbon, where he regularly taught Ontology and Contemporary Philosophy. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree at the Catholic University of Leuven, and completed his Doctorate at the University of Lisbon.
Paisana’s main area of research was Phenomenology. As an expert in Husserl and Heidegger, he did a comparative study of them (Phenomenology and Hermeneutics. The Relationship Between Husserl and Heidegger), which is one of the most incisive and profound appraisals one can find in the specialized literature. Among his several publications, it is also worth referring the studies Husserl and the Idea of Europe, and History of Philosophy and Philosophical Tradition.
As a prominent phenomenologist, J. Paisana was also a convener. Around him, a solid and considerably large group of students was formed, upon which he provided guidance intermingled with intellectual brilliance and warm friendship. As a result of this movement, a phenomenological journal was founded, Phainomenon, in the year 2000. He was its first editor in chief.
However, J. Paisana was, first of all, a citizen of the world. His dedication to phenomenology as a researcher went side by side with a permanent interest and attention to the relationship between Phenomenology and other philosophical traditions, namely Analytic Philosophy and Marxism. In addition, the objects of his constant attention and intervention were the main issues regarding Politics, Civilization, and Culture, the dialogue between Europe and other cultures, as well as the big challenges of European politics.
Appealing to this cosmopolitan feature of his personality, the João Paisana Lectures are open to an intervention of phenomenology in the big questions of Humanity, joining together scholarly expertise with an opening of philosophy to the world. The very base upon which the Lectures are instituted is Philosophy as “thinking of the World”, beyond the urgency for action, in a critical and reflective stance.
Within this framework, the biggest challenge of the João Paisana Lectures amounts to turning phenomenology into a real phenomenological Philosophy, as a way of approaching the paramount issues where the present and the future of Humanity are decided.
