Glossary of phenomenological concepts

A philosophical tradition is inseparable of the constitution of a lexicon where a conceptuality of its own is condensed and a way of thinking is built in. Phenomenology, one of the most significant philosophical traditions of the twentieth century and of our time, is one of the most important cases of invention and reinvention of concepts in the whole history of philosophy. The abundance of terms that belong to the phenomenological tradition as well as the reinterpretations and conceptual displacements that the traditional philosophical concepts have been submitted to, imposes a task of inventorying and semantic explanation. This is the aim of the Glossary. A work like this one can be an introduction into phenomenology and a tool for an advanced study of the phenomenological tradition in the variety of its authors and theoretical orientations. So with this glossary we intend:

1. To make an inventory of the thematic concepts of phenomenology, taking them out of the work of the most important thinkers (like Husserl, Scheler, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, etc.);

2. To propose a translation of each term into Portuguese and to inform about the most common translations in other European languages;

3. To produce a concise but rich description of its conceptual content;

4. To refer by each term to the corresponding authors and works. The scope of the Glossary is, in a broad sense, the phenomenological tradition that had its origin in the works of Edmund Husserl and was continued by other authors. Nevertheless, the Glossary will be similar to Enciclopédia de Termos Lógico-Filosóficos (Lisboa: Gradiva, 2011).

Translation of Husserl and Merleau-Ponty

In parallel to the constitution of the Glossary the present project aims to make a systematic effort to translate into Portuguese the classical works of phenomenological thought. The two tasks – translation and glossary – are not lines of work existing side by side but complete each other and bring about common results. Bearing in mind the essence of phenomenological tradition, we decided to translate the main works of two major authors of the phenomenological tradition. We chose Husserl and Ponty as reference authors of the phenomenology in German and French. According to this, we intend to translate 9 works of Husserl. We already have the formal agreement of the Husserl Archives in Loewen and of Kluwer Academic Publishers for the translation of these woks. Regarding several translations of Husserl’s works the corresponding samples of translation have already been sent to the Husserl’s Archives and were approved by them. Regarding Ponty we intend to translate 3 major works. The director of Husserl’s translation is Pedro Alves. The director of Ponty’s translations is Isabel M. Dias. The Glossary is organized by Pedro Alves, I. M. Dias and José Santos.
