António Teixeira is an associate professor at Universidade Aberta (UAb), where he heads the Department of Education and Distance Learning, and also a researcher at the Center of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon. He’s also a member of the Board of the Council of Fellows at EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network and a Fellow at Ibstpi - International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction.

Formerly, he was a Pro-rector for innovation in Distance Learning at UAb and a member of the Portuguese Rectors Council (CRUP) specialized committees on Scientific Research and Knowledge Transfer, and Evaluation, Quality and Innovation. He was also the President of EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network and a Director at Ibstpi - International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction.

Presently he’s a member of the International Advisory Board of the Distance Education and Learning Futures Alliance of the Massey University and the Vice-president of the Ad Lucem Association (University of Lisbon). Additionally, he’s on the scientific board of over a dozen international journals on education and on philosophy. He’s also an external expert at AQU Cataluña - Agència per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya (AQU Catalunya), and an invited expert at ANII - Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Innovación do Uruguai.

Throughout the years has participated in close to thirty international research projects, mostly funded by the European Commission and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. His major research focus being on educational innovation and open education, in particular OERs, OEPs and MOOCs, he also researches on the relation between philosophy and education with a special attention to ethical issues. Additional topics of research include aesthetics and philosophy of art.

He was a visiting scholar at the Korean National Open University and has taught courses at the University of Oxford, the Universitá Roma 3, the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia and the Universidade Estadual do Ceará. He is also an EDEN Senior Fellow.
